To fully understand the history of Taiwan, we have collected articles as references from various places. NTMH is currently working on some projects, including publishing “Knowledge Tank of Taiwan’s history”, “Collection of Taiwan’s history”, “Newspaper catalogue of Taiwan in Japanese colonial era”, and translating “oversea Taiwan’s history” for future releases.
“Collection of Taiwan’s history” series include “The compilation files of Taiwan during the dynasties of Ming and Qing ”, “Contract articles of Taiwan governor”, “compilation files of edict of Taiwanese interchange in the Qing dynasty”, “Article collection of local Taiwan in the Qing dynasty” etc. The newspapers and magazines offer the readers the comprehensive historical data to get insights into the society during the Japanese colonial era, for example, “New Taiwan Mingbao”, “New Taiwan Mingbao association”, and “Tainan Newspaper”.
The publication of the “Translation of Oversea Taiwan’s Historical Data” has a multilingual character as it’s influenced by the past colonial regime. It is divided into two categories, Western and Japanese languages. The current publications in western language are as followings: “Letters from Taiwan commissioner to Batavia general of Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie(VOC) vol.1(1622-1626)”, “Letters from Taiwan commissioner to Batavia general of Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie(VOC) vol.2(1627-1629)”, “19th century of Taiwan—The story of Formosa & 14 western travelers”. The publications in Japanese language are as listed: "The course of changing & development of Taiwanese police government: public security after in charge of politic, 2nd revised, vol.1", "The Wushe Incident In Japanese" etc. In addition, some historical maps are also published, like "The longitude & latitude of Formosa: Map of Taiwan Illustrated by Westerners in the 16th-19th centuries", "Measurement of Taiwan: Maps of Taiwan Illustrated during the Japanese Colonial Era from 1895-1945", "Research of Illustration of Narrated Taiwan Territories". |

NMTH has taken "research on designed subject" as the route to development of Taiwanese history, re-analyzing both past & current historical articles, and holding exhibitions. "Tainan city research", "Research of Taiwanese women" and "Research on the Pingpu tribe" etc, are currently under research.
Tainan city research:
in Taiwan, Tainan was the center of politics, history, economy and culture for a long period of time. Furthermore, it was also seen as the capital of Taiwan's culture, and has accumulated a large number of articles and research papers. This research adopts a new perspective and the main areas are:

Research of Taiwanese women:
Women are mostly ignored in Taiwan's history. What are their stories behind their social status and phases of life? From the research of Taiwanese women, we hope to collect the historical data of women through interviews and interacting with women from various tribes/regions/occupations in order to display the lifestyle of women in the past. The followings are the main approaches:

Research on the Pingpu tribe:
Many native tribes use to be extremely active on the plains, hence they are called the Pingpu tribe. The Pingpu tribe lost its distinguishing trait due to intense culture transition. They are one of the most important subjects of research in the history of Taiwan due to their close contact and tribal interactions.
Research on historical subject of event:
To present important historical events, NMTH conducted researches and exhibitions on

those events , for example, the research of the Wushe incident in 2010. It is not merely published, but also translated the precious Japanese historical data and edited as "The Translation of Japanese Historical articles of the Wushe incident”.
In addition, there were also researches on important diaries from individuals, for instance, "Letters to family from prison--Qihua Ke's letter collection", which was written by Mr. Qihua Ke's in prison during the period of authoritarian rule.
Museum's research is different from the general research centers due to its distinct interdisciplinary methods of research. NMTH integrated ethnology, sociology, anthropology, archeology and geography, using history study as the core to carry out the researches on specific topics.

In order to show the depth and breadth of history, NMTH has exhibited some related researches and collections in the lobby of the administration building or the special exhibition room.
There have been different exhibitions, such as "Transportation exhibition", "Happy Tiger's year", " exhibition of ceramic articles donated from Zhang jian xu ", and "Journey of the goods".
The special exhibition “Ancient city, metropolis, palace of Celestial—History of Tainan city”, was held after the opening of the exhibition building. The core value of the exhibition is to see Tainan’s history and culture with the contemporary thinking, in order to understand the overall society from different backgrounds/areas and to look into the connection between the outside & inside of the city wall.
To expand our researches on collected articles, NMTH conducted researches on the cultural contexts and origins of historical objects, and elaborated on their cultural characters through exhibition & educational purposes. In this way, NMTH looked forward to developing more methods on article research. The relevant book “Treasuring Taiwan—Record collection of NMTH” was published as the result. |
