Venue: 1st Floor, Taiwan Art and Culture Corridor, National Taiwan Library
The place names in Taiwan encapsulate the narratives of cultural encounters and interactions among diverse groups of people. These lands are named in our respective native languages, allowing us to perceive and appreciate the richness of "diversity" through the lenses of the processes that led to the stories being told.
Centered around the theme of "stories of place names," the exhibition explores four types of encounters between groups—exchange, acceptance, connection, and conflict—alongside nine place name stories from different ethnic groups. It vividly portrays the interactions between diverse ethnic communities, as recorded in oral histories and legends, while shedding light on the lasting imprints of cultural encounters found within the narratives of how these places acquired their names.
The exhibition combines the "Native Language Place Name Stories" online exhibition website (https://pnts.nmth.gov.tw/). By scanning the QR code provided at the venue, visitors can enjoy animated stories narrated by native language teachers. Furthermore, they can participate in the creation of place names online and share their own unique place name stories.
