In the 10 years since NMTH opened, more than 5,000,000 people have walked through our doors. Over the years, we have accumulated 140,000 collection pieces, organized 85 exhibitions, held hundreds of activities, while compiling and studying the history of Taiwan. During this time, we have grown, innovated, shown concern for Taiwan’s past and future as we strove to enhance the museum. We want to thank you for helping us celebrate our 10th birthday and work with us to build the future together by visiting the NMTH during its “10 Years x 10 Events” Activity.

When originally founded in 1993, NMTH was positioned as a provincial museum, but in 2001, it became the first national museum centered on Taiwan history. Located where the “Taijiang Inner Sea” used to be some 400 years ago, this area has witnessed a great deal of history as it evolved from an inland sea to a dried-up lagoon to a sea of sugarcane. Over the years, it accumulated, produced, and constructed knowledge as it traced the trajectory of the land and its people. Today, it is home to NMTH, a place where nature and culture shake hands. Since opening its doors in 2011, NMTH has served as a repository for collective memory to become “museum of everyone”.

As NMTH has tilled the soil over the past decade, it has remained rooted in the past, while growing steadily toward the future. It has planted connections in Taiwan, while developing an international network. It has delved deeper into Taiwan history research themes and research resources can now be easily accessed locally. From permanent exhibitions inside the museum to the ecological management of the park outside the museum, we are committed to serving different audiences as evidenced by our efforts to promote various cultural equally, our long-standing cooperation with museums and schools and our exploration of the possibilities of museum theater. Museum development is a long-term endeavor. We will continue to do more.

NMTH’s collection consists of approximately 140,000 items from Taiwan and abroad, ranging from books, documents, maps, photographs, and other objects, covering periods from the prehistoric to modern. Interestingly, as much as 35% of the entire collection were personal donations. Some are products of their times, others have sentimental value, but each one has its own story. In addition to preserving the visible objects, we strive to put down in writing the invisible memories that they come with. Let’s listen to their stories.

While permanent exhibitions represent a museum’s core values, special exhibitions are unfettered and exciting in their own way. Over the past ten years, special exhibitions have not only been NMTH’s focus of attention, they also offer a glimpse into the interests, attempts, and concerns that NMTH has had as well as its target audiences and what kind of friends it has made. In the areas of publications and creative industries, NMTH’s achievements over the past ten years have been quite impressive. For example, Watch Taiwan, a quarterly magazine which we pour so much of our hearts into, received a Golden Tripod Award. We have also released a number of books and videos.
