To promote academic research on Taiwan history and deepen people’s understanding of Taiwan history, starting in 2012, the NMTH has carried out the digitization of the Qing Empire’s Grand Council memorandums in microfilm and compiled catalogs.
The original memorandums are so old and widely dispersed that many are damaged or lost. The existing collection of similar records written in cinnabar ink is also incomplete, although the quantity is large. When using such documents for research purposes, one may find that they are “many but not thorough.” Thus, the library has released the Grand Council memorandums, a set of documentation containing duplicates and filings, with a rather systematic and stringent approach. The NMTH hopes to establish an academic archive by converting paper copies into microfilm ones, while compiling volumes, making catalogs, and comparing and editing materials. In this way, it shall be able to more efficiently promote the academic uses of first-hand administrative documents of the Qing Dynasty and continue to deepen studies on Taiwan’s history.
